Bondage and Slavery is a condition of subjection, burdens, tribute, or proposed service under another people. King Limhi said that his people were “in bondage to the Lamanites” and paid a tax “which is grievous to be borne”. He said they would be slaves to the Nephites rather than pay tribute to the Lamanite king. The Lamanite king exacted one half of their grain, flocks, herds, and possessions (Mosiah 7:15-22).
The Lord told Alma and his brethren, while they were in bondage, “I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders”. He told Alma, “Thou shalt go before this people,” and promised to deliver the people out of bondage (Mosiah 24:13-17). The king said that his people would be slaves until they repaired the murders and sins they had committed (Alma 27:8-9).
