Capital punishment

Capital punishment is the putting of people to death by command or under law. Amulek said, “the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered” (Alma 34:12). Alma asked whether, if “a man murdered he should die,” he would fear death after murdering (Alma 42:19). The men of Pachus and king-men who fought against their country “were executed according to the law” (Alma 62:9).

King Noah commanded that Abinadi be taken and “put to death,” and Abinadi later suffered “death by fire” because he would not deny God’s commandments (Mosiah 17:1; Mosiah 17:20). Judges secretly put to death people who testified of Christ, though no man was to be put to death without authority from the governor (3 Nephi 6:23-24). The brother of Shiblom caused prophets who foretold destruction to be put to death (Ether 11:5).
