Com¹

Com was a ruler in the line of the early Jaredite kings documented in the Book of Mormon. The son of King Coriantum, Com ascended to the throne after his father’s passing and governed for a span of forty-nine years (Ether 9:25). His reign was characterized by a continuation of the righteousness that his father, Coriantum, had maintained. Later in his rule, the conditions among his people began to deteriorate. Despite having fathered several sons and daughters including his successor, Heth, Com’s tenure ended tumultuously when Heth turned to the “secret plans” that had previously brought destruction upon their society (Ether 9:26).

Heth’s rebellion culminated in patricide and usurpation, as he slew Com and took control of the Jaredite nation (Ether 9:27). Under Heth’s rule, the kingdom experienced a period of wickedness, climaxing in a devastating famine. The tragic end of Com’s reign marked the beginning of turbulent times for the Jaredites, with the nation descending into further intervals of wickedness before periods of repentance and righteousness under new leadership.
