Shiblon

Shiblon, the second son of Alma the Younger, played a notable role as a steadfast missionary and a keeper of sacred Nephite records. He first appears in historical accounts when he joins his father on a critical mission to the Zoramites around 74 BC (Alma 31:7). During this mission, Shiblon faced significant adversity, including being bound and stoned for his beliefs and teachings (Alma 38:4). His endurance of persecution is emblematic of his deep commitment to his faith and his undeviating resolve in the face of adversity.

Alma, in personal counsel to Shiblon, extols his son’s faithfulness, patience, and diligence (Alma 38:2-4). He encourages Shiblon to continue in his trust of God, assuring him of deliverance from trials and the ultimate reward of salvation through Jesus Christ (Alma 38:5, 9). Shiblon is also cautioned by his father to maintain humility, to avoid pride and idleness, and to bridle his passions in order to be filled with love—a counsel indicative of the high moral character expected of him (Alma 38:10-14).

Continuing in his ministry, Shiblon’s efforts alongside other missionaries contribute to a period of peace and great prosperity within the church, as recorded in 72 BC (Alma 49:30). His integrity and devotion are further validated when he is entrusted with the sacred Nephite records in 56 BC following his brother Helaman (Alma 63:1). Shiblon is recognized for his upright life and his continual observance of the commandments of God (Alma 63:2).

His diligence and just nature are honored posthumously through his careful transfer of the sacred records to his nephew, Helaman, son of Helaman, before his passing in 53 BC (Alma 63:11). Shiblon’s life is a testament to faithful service, often rendered without fanfare or widespread recognition, yet indispensable to the upholding of truth and righteousness among the Nephites.
